Ecosystems and What They Are Made Of

In Science this week we have learned all about ecosystems and what they consist of. An ecosystem is all the things that interact in a specific area, including living and nonliving things.

The nonliving things in an ecosystem help the living things survive. This includes light, air, water, and soil.

Living things that use these resources are known as organisms. This includes all of the plants and animals in the ecosystem.

We have also learned that the plants and animals are divided into autotrophs and heterotrophs

Autotrophs produce their own food.

Heterotrophs must eat other organisms to survive.

For this assignment, you are to choose your favorite part of an ecosystem; it can be living or nonliving. You must explain why it is your favorite or why you think it is important. If you choose a plant or animal, discuss whether it is an autotroph or a heterotroph.

  1. My favorite part of the ecosystem are fish! I think fish play such an important role in the ecosystem because they provide food for humans to eat as well as other living organisms found in water. Fish are heterotrophic animals.

    1. Fish are one of my favorite parts of the ecosystem as well. I have always been interested in fish because there are so many different kinds. I personally do not enjoy eating fish, but they are very healthy.

    2. My favorite part of the ecosystem would be life in lake. There are so many beautiful lakes out there that keeping them clean is something we should always maintain. I lake because of the peaceful and enjoyable surrounding to nature itself and also because I like kayaking. In a lake ecosystem, the sun hits the water and helps the algae grow. Algae produces oxygen for animals like fish, and provides food for microscopic animals. Small fish eat the microscopic animals, absorb oxygen with their gills and expel carbon dioxide, which plants then use to grow. If the algae disappeared, everything else would be impacted. Microscopic animals wouldn't have enough food, fish wouldn't have enough oxygen and plants would lose some of the carbon dioxide they need to grow. Lakes are autotroph.

    3. Lakes are a very important ecosystem. I agree that it is our responsibility to keep our lakes clean. Lakes are a huge system and it one thing goes wrong, every other part is affected. Lakes are beautiful and contain things that benefit us humans, such as fish.

  2. My favorite part of the ecosystem is the soil. I know it is a weird thing to pick but I think the soil is very import. Soil is a nonliving part of an ecosystem. The soil helps nourish the plants and helps shape ponds and lakes.
